The ProQual L3 First Aid and Complications course is the regulated qualification that every aesthetics practitioner must hold before progressing to any Level 6 qualification. It is not a generic workplace first aid certificate; it is built specifically for the aesthetic clinical environment, covering the emergencies and complications you will actually encounter in practice.


At £299, it is the single most important step you can take to unlock your progression to Level 6. Without a current, valid Level 3 first aid qualification, ProQual AB will not confirm your enrolment on the L6 Certificate in Microneedling, L6 Certificate in Skin Booster, L6 Certificate in Chemical Peel or L6 Diploma in Aesthetic Practice.

What You Will Learn - Theory

The theory content of this course covers every emergency and complication an aesthetics practitioner at Level 6 and above is expected to recognise and manage. This is not generic first aid theory every module is built around the aesthetic clinical environment.

Basic Life Support and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

The chain of survival, how to assess an unresponsive client, correct CPR technique at 100–120 compressions per minute and 5–6cm depth, rescue breathing, and how CPR quality directly affects survival outcomes. Recovery position, choking management and when to call 999 are covered in full.

Anaphylaxis - Recognition, Grading and Response

Anaphylaxis can be triggered by topical anaesthetics, injectable products, latex or skincare products and it can progress from mild skin signs to cardiovascular collapse within minutes. This module covers the full anaphylaxis grading system from Grade I (localised skin reaction) through to Grade IV (cardiac arrest), recognition signs, adrenaline auto-injector administration into the anterolateral thigh, correct dose and hold time, and post-administration management.

Vasovagal Syncope - The Most Common Aesthetic Emergency

Fainting is the most frequently occurring emergency in aesthetic practice. Pre-syncopal warning signs, immediate management recline, elevate legs, loosen clothing, monitor and distinguishing a simple vasovagal episode from a more serious event that requires 999. Pre-treatment prevention steps including ensuring clients have eaten, managing room temperature and identifying high-risk clients at consultation.

Allergic Reactions - Local Versus Systemic

 The spectrum from localised contact dermatitis through to systemic anaphylaxis. Recognising which category a reaction falls into, managing localised reactions and identifying when a localised response signals risk of systemic progression. The critical clinical distinction between a contra-indication a factor that prevents treatment proceeding and a contra-action, an unexpected reaction during or after treatment requiring immediate response.

The Emergency Drug Kit - What Every Practitioner Must Carry

​Every aesthetic practitioner performing injectable treatments must carry an emergency drug kit. This module covers the JCCP-recommended minimum kit contents adrenaline 1:1000 solution, adrenaline auto-injector, hyaluronidase, chlorphenamine, hydrocortisone, GTN spray and aspirin 300mg alongside storage requirements, expiry checking, prescribing status of each item and the practitioner's legal responsibility for kit maintenance.

Health, Safety, Infection Control and RIDDOR

Hand hygiene at WHO standard, PPE requirements by treatment type, sharps handling and needle-stick injury protocol. RIDDOR the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 applies to aesthetic practice. This module covers which events trigger a reporting obligation and the correct procedure. Most aesthetic first aid courses do not address RIDDOR at all.

What You Will Do - Practical Training

The practical element of this course builds the emergency response skills that theoretical knowledge alone cannot develop. You practise every critical intervention on realistic equipment under Laura's direct supervision not in a classroom scenario disconnected from aesthetic practice.

CPR and AED Operation

Hands-on CPR practice at correct rate and depth, transition to AED, device operation following voice prompts, minimising compression interruptions and how to register your premises on The Circuit national defibrillator network. You leave confident in resuscitation not just theoretically aware of it.

Adrenaline Auto-Injector Administration

Correct operation of EpiPen, Jext or Emerade devices, injection site identification, duration of hold and post-administration management. Practised on training devices to build the muscle memory that matters when a real anaphylactic event occurs in your treatment room.

Hyaluronidase Emergency Administration

Reconstitution of hyaluronidase from powder to injectable solution, the emergency dose for vascular occlusion, injection technique over blanched tissue and the follow-up assessment protocol. This is the intervention that prevents skin necrosis when administered promptly every practitioner injecting HA filler must be able to perform it without hesitation.

Emergency Scenario Practice

Working through realistic aesthetic emergency scenarios a client who becomes unresponsive mid-treatment, a suspected vascular occlusion during filler injection, a delayed anaphylactic reaction post-appointment. Practising the correct sequence of assessment, response, administration and 999 communication in a controlled setting before you face these situations with real clients.

Recognition and Assessment of Vascular Occlusion

Identifying the early visual and symptomatic signs of vascular occlusion during or after filler injection blanching, mottling, delayed capillary refill and disproportionate pain. Practised through visual case comparisons and hands-on palpation checks so you can distinguish a true occlusion from normal post-injection swelling within seconds, not minutes.

Airway Management and Recovery Position

Correct assessment of an unconscious but breathing casualty, safe positioning into the recovery position, and continuous monitoring of airway and breathing until emergency services arrive. Practised alongside CPR so you can confidently distinguish which response a given situation calls for.

What Certificate Do You Receive?

On successful completion, you receive the ProQual Level 3 First Aid and Complications certificate issued by ProQual AB, an Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation, and listed on the Regulated Qualifications Framework at Level 3.
 

This qualification satisfies the mandatory first aid prerequisite for all ProQual Level 6 aesthetic qualifications. It is the regulated credential ProQual AB requires before confirming enrolment on any L6 programme.

Aesthetics-Specific Complications - What This Course Covers That Generic First Aid Does Not

This is the module that separates the ProQual L3 First Aid and Complications course from a standard workplace first aid certificate. Generic first aid courses do not cover the complications aesthetic practitioners actually face. This course does.
 

Vascular Occlusion The Most Serious Injectable Complication Vascular occlusion occurs when filler blocks blood flow to tissue, risking skin necrosis without rapid intervention. This module covers the 5H emergency framework Halt (stop injecting immediately), Hyaluronidase (administer immediately at emergency dose), Heat (warm compress to promote vasodilation), Help (call 999 if visual symptoms develop), Hourly review (the golden hour concept — the first 60 minutes are critical for outcome). Tissue ischaemic for over six hours carries significantly higher necrosis risk even with hyaluronidase.
 

Botulinum Toxin Complications Ptosis eyelid and brow mechanism, onset timeline, recognition and apraclonidine 0.5% eye drops management. Dysphagia and neck weakness from platysma treatment severity grading and escalation criteria. Asymmetry and over-treatment management and documentation. Botulinum Toxin Distant Effects (BTDE) recognition of systemic spread and 999 indication.
 

Infection Recognition and Late-Presenting Reactions Post-treatment infection signs cellulitis, abscess formation, biofilm activation. Late-presenting infections developing days or weeks after treatment and how to advise clients to recognise and report them. When to escalate to medical treatment rather than manage in-clinic.

Why This Is a Mandatory L6 Prerequisite

The ProQual L3 First Aid and Complications certificate does more than satisfy a qualification entry requirement. It is the formal evidence that you are clinically prepared to practise at an advanced level and it matters to your insurer as well as to ProQual.

Insurance and Professional Recognition

What You Will Need

This course has minimal equipment requirements. Everything needed for the practical sessions is provided at LBL Academy on your training day.

  • No equipment to purchase before attending all practical training resources including CPR manikins, AED training devices and hyaluronidase reconstitution equipment are provided at LBL Academy

  • Emergency drug kit post-qualification requirement once qualified and practising at injectable level, you will need to assemble and maintain your own emergency drug kit. Kit contents, prescribing status of each item and how to legally source them are all covered during training

  • Current valid First Aid certificate the certificate issued on completion must remain current (typically three years) for the duration of your L6 programme. If it expires during your studies, it must be renewed before your L6 assessment can proceed

  • Documentation your signed assessment records and certificate form part of your ProQual L6 enrolment documentation. Keep your certificate accessible throughout your qualification pathway
