What This Course Covers
1. The Physics - Why Tattoo Removal Laser Works
Q-switched lasers (nanosecond) fragment ink particles using heat; picosecond lasers (trillionths of a second) fragment them mechanically via shockwave, which is faster and safer for stubborn colours.
2. Wavelength Selection by Ink Colour
1064nm is primary for black/dark inks and darker skin tones; 532nm is used for red/orange/yellow (with caution on lighter skin); 755nm targets blues/greens — resistant colours (turquoise, purple) require picosecond lasers.
3. Ink Chemistry - Amateur vs Professional vs Cosmetic Tattoo
Professional ink clears predictably due to its consistency; amateur ink is unpredictable; cosmetic tattoo ink (iron oxide) carries a risk of paradoxical darkening — a patch test is essential.
4. Fitzpatrick-Specific Protocols
Fluence is adjusted according to skin type: standard for Types I–III, conservative (20–30% lower) for Type IV, and only 1064nm with aggressive cooling plus a mandatory patch test for Types V–VI.
5. The Kirby-Desai Scale - Estimating Treatment Sessions
A structured tool for estimating session count based on 6 factors (skin type, location, ink colour, quantity, scarring, layering), applied practically rather than just as a theoretical concept.

6. Ink Chemistry Amateur vs Professional vs Cosmetic Tattoo
Professional, cosmetic and metallic inks respond differently to treatment; cosmetic and metallic inks carry a risk of paradoxical darkening.
7. Cover-Up Fading - A Distinct Treatment Goal
This is a different goal from full removal — only partial clearance is needed (4–6 sessions) so that a new tattoo can effectively cover the old one.
8. Session Spacing - The Biology Behind the Timeline
A minimum gap of 6–8 weeks is required for macrophage clearance; 8–10 weeks for Fitzpatrick Type IV and above.
9. Pain Management Options
Topical anaesthesia (EMLA cream) and cold air cooling are standard; injected anaesthesia falls outside CPD scope.
10. Contraindications and Consultation Framework
Active tan, infection, photosensitising medications, history of keloid scarring, pregnancy and gold therapy are absolute contraindications to treatment.

Morning - Physics, Ink Science and Clinical Protocols
Q-switched physics and photoacoustic fragmentation, wavelength selection by ink colour, ink chemistry by tattoo type including cosmetic tattoo risks, Fitzpatrick protocols and fluence adjustment, the Kirby-Desai scale in practical application, cover-up fading as a separate workflow, session spacing biology, pain management options, contraindication framework, complication recognition and management. Interactive throughout real client scenarios, before-and-after analysis, and the clinical decisions practitioners face most frequently in practice.
Afternoon - Live Model Practice
Supervised laser tattoo removal treatments on live models. Every delegate operates the device consultation, patch test protocol, parameter selection, treatment delivery and post-treatment assessment under Laura's direct supervision. Real-time feedback on fluence selection, cooling technique, client management and clinical response assessment.
On Completion
CPD certificate on the day. Wavelength-to-ink-colour reference guide, Kirby-Desai scale scoring template, Fitzpatrick parameter chart, contraindication checklist, patch test documentation template and aftercare client guidance provided.
