Entry Requirements for Laser Treatments

Level 3 NVQ in Beauty Therapy, advanced skin or aesthetics qualification, or equivalent recognised professional background

Working knowledge of skin anatomy laser-tissue interaction is taught in this course, but foundational skin biology is assumed

Valid Level 3 First Aid certificate First Aid at Work or Emergency First Aid current before the course date

Local authority registration check required before treating clients commercially some councils classify laser as a licensable procedure. Laura will advise on this at consultation

Minimum age of 18 years, with valid photo identification (passport or driving licence) required at the time of enrolment

Awareness of relevant health and safety regulations surrounding laser equipment use, including eye protection protocols and skin type assessment (Fitzpatrick scale)
What This Course Covers
1. Laser Physics - The Science Behind the Treatment
Explains the principle of selective photothermolysis: the correct wavelength and pulse duration ensure that only the target tissue (melanin, haemoglobin, water) is heated, while surrounding tissue remains unaffected.
2. Laser Systems - Alexandrite, Diode, Nd:YAG and IPL
Alexandrite (755nm) works best on lighter skin; Diode (808nm) covers a wider Fitzpatrick range; Nd:YAG (1064nm) is the safest option for darker skin (Types V–VI); IPL is versatile but carries more risk on darker skin.
3. Fitzpatrick Skin Typing - Fluence and Parameter Selection
Fluence and wavelength must be selected according to skin type — incorrect selection can lead to burns and hyperpigmentation.
4. Contraindications - Who You Should Not Treat
Absolute contraindications (active tan or recent sun exposure, pregnancy, active skin infection or cold sores in the treatment area, isotretinoin use within the last 6 months, photosensitising medication) and relative contraindications (keloid scarring history, epilepsy with certain laser types, metal implants or pacemakers near the treatment area) requiring clinical judgement before proceeding.
Laser Safety, MHRA Compliance and Local Regulation
Overview of MHRA guidance on the safe use of laser and IPL devices, mandatory eye protection protocols for both practitioner and client, safe operating distances, and the local authority licensing requirements that apply to laser treatments in many UK regions. Covers how to check whether your council classifies laser as a licensable procedure and what documentation is required to operate legally.
Device Operation and Client Safety Protocol
Step-by-step treatment protocol: skin assessment and Fitzpatrick classification, patch testing, correct handpiece selection, parameter setting based on skin and hair type, cooling technique, and real-time skin response monitoring. Covers how to recognise and respond immediately to an adverse skin reaction during treatment.
7. Dosage and Treatment Frequency
Session numbers and spacing vary by indication — hair removal follows the natural hair growth cycle (typically 4–6 week intervals across 6–8 sessions), while pigmentation and vascular treatments are usually spaced 4–6 weeks apart across fewer sessions. Covers how to set realistic client expectations and build a treatment course plan.
On the Day - Course Format
One structured training day. Theory is delivered first in a sequence that builds your knowledge progressively science, anatomy, technique, consultation and safety before you move to supervised live practice in the afternoon.
Morning - Theory and Clinical Framework
B12 science, cyanocobalamin versus hydroxocobalamin, indications, contraindications, deltoid anatomy, injection technique walkthrough, dosage and frequency, consent and documentation, prescribing framework, and anaphylaxis response. Laura works through the clinical questions practitioners most commonly face when setting up B12 injection practice including prescriber arrangements, product sourcing and insurance requirements.
Afternoon - Live Practice
Supervised intramuscular B12 injections on live volunteers. Every delegate performs the full procedure preparation, site identification, injection technique and post-injection assessment under Laura's direct supervision. Real-time feedback on grip, angle, depth and technique. You leave having performed real injections, not having watched a demonstration.
On Completion
CPD certificate issued on the day. B12 injection protocol reference guide, consultation documentation templates and aftercare guidance provided. Post-course support from Laura as you set up your B12 injection service.
