Dermaplaning is accessible to practitioners at an earlier stage of their aesthetics career than injectable treatments but it is not without clinical requirements. A sound understanding of skin anatomy and experience assessing different skin types is the baseline.

Valid Level 3 First Aid certificate First Aid at Work or Emergency First Aid current before the course date

What This Course Covers
What Dermaplaning Is - and What It Is Not
A sterile surgical blade is used at a 45-degree angle to remove the stratum corneum and vellus hair; this is entirely different from at-home dermaplaning tools.
The Science of Exfoliation - Why Dermaplaning Works
Dermaplaning mechanically accelerates desquamation, giving smoother texture, a natural glow, and better product penetration. Vellus hair never grows back coarser — only the cut ends may feel slightly rough temporarily.
Blade Anatomy and Selection
A 10R blade is standard for larger areas (cheeks, forehead), while 14R or feather blades are used for smaller precision zones (upper lip, chin, nose). Blades must always be single-use and sterile.
Skin Anatomy for Dermaplaning
The blade should only reach the stratum corneum, never the viable epidermis. Extra care is needed in the temporal, lateral nose and periorbital areas due to vascular proximity.
Contraindications - Who You Cannot Treat
Active acne, active rosacea, cold sores, blood thinners and bleeding disorders are absolute contraindications. Mild comedonal acne, pregnancy and thin skin require clinical judgement.
Facial Zone Technique - Stroke Direction, Angle and Skin Tension
The 45-degree rule must always be followed; each facial zone (forehead, cheeks, upper lip, chin, nose, periorbital area) has its own stroke direction and pressure requirements.
Dermaplaning as a Combination Treatment
Performing dermaplaning before a chemical peel improves product penetration; it can also be combined with skincare application or microneedling, and works equally well as a standalone treatment.
Sharps Handling, Infection Control and Legal Compliance
Blades must be disposed of in a sharps bin as a legal requirement; needle-stick injury protocol and local authority licensing requirements are also covered.
Pre- and Post-Treatment Protocols
Pre-treatment includes double cleansing and a contraindication check; post-treatment involves soothing/hydrating products and SPF application, with active ingredients avoided for 48 hours. Aftercare also requires avoiding sun exposure and heat treatments for one week.
On the Day - Course Format
One structured training day - theory in the morning, live model practice in the afternoon.
Morning - Theory and Clinical Knowledge
Dermaplaning science and skin biology, blade anatomy and selection, facial zone anatomy, contraindication framework in depth, the hair regrowth question and the science behind the answer, combination treatment protocols, sharps handling and legal compliance, pre- and post-treatment protocols. Interactive throughout Laura works through real clinic scenarios, common client questions and the clinical decisions that determine whether a dermaplaning treatment produces a consistent excellent result or an uneven one.
Afternoon - Live Model Practice
Supervised dermaplaning on live models across all facial zones. Every delegate treats you do not observe and leave. Laura supervises every stroke, providing real-time feedback on blade angle, grip, skin tension and pressure across different facial zones and skin types. Multiple models where possible to give you experience of different skin thicknesses, vellus hair densities and facial contours.
On Completion
CPD certificate issued on the day. Facial zone technique reference guide, contraindication checklist and client aftercare template provided. Post-course support from Laura as you begin offering dermaplaning in your own practice.
